Massachusetts Marriage Laws

Getting Married in Massachusetts

If you plan on getting married in Massachusetts, the only requirement is that you have a valid Massachusetts Marriage License.

You do not have to be a resident of Massachusetts, and you do not have to have a blood test to obtain a marriage license.

Both parties intending to be married must first go to a Massachusetts City or Town Clerk to obtain your license. You do not need to be a resident of the city or town where you file for your license and it may be used to be married in any city or town within the state. The fee will vary from town to town. You must both be over 18 and will need to show a valid ID (driver's license, birth certificate. passport etc.) There is a mandatory 3 day waiting period before you can pick up your license from the clerks office. Your license is ONLY valid for sixty days from the date of filing.

The person who performs the ceremony must sign the license and return it to the city or town clerk's office where it was issued. This is the only place where the license will be registered.
